The judges examine dogs of a specific breed or sometimes dogs of all breeds, to see if it fulfills the breed standards or not during a dog shows, breed shows or conformation shows. Such kinds of shows are being conducted regularly by kennel clubs and breed clubs. At specialty shows only specific breeds are examined.
Judging is based on the standards set prior to the show by the judges of the show. Matching the set standards laid out for the show is an extremely tough task as the judgement is totally subjective. While comparing one dog with another, the dog is also compared to the judge’s image of an ideal dog which meet the breed standard almost perfectly. To have a winner you need find a dog that fits almost completely the set criteria as laid out for the dog show.
The judges are totally responsible for drawing up the conformation point based on along list of breed standards. Conformation points can vary from one competition to another but certain general requisites still form the basis of the judging. While the pet’s color, pattern, length, type and quality are all observed, the fur is still the most important factor. The judges will consider carefully the positioning, quality and quantity of the markings.
Healthy skin with no pigmentation is also one of the important criterions with the shape and color of the head also taken into consideration. The general attitude and temperament of each dog also contributes to the decision. The jaw-line and the structure of the teeth and how they align when the jaw is shut are also considered. Shape and color of the eyes and shape and set of the ears are looked at including the size, ratio of the length and height also compared. The style of walking and gait the shape of the tail and feet are closely observed - the dogs, which enter such competitions, should be well groomed. Every participating dog should be registered with its name attached with the breeder’s kennel name.
Because every dog can have a registered name as well as a pet name, the kennel club uses the registered name while the owner refers to the pet using the call name. Both local shows and national shows never fail to attract contenders from different parts of the country. Usually dog shows are hierarchical competitions where the winners earn certain points in each show at each level, which makes them eligible for the next show.
To ensure that the chosen champion is the best in the breed, these shows at the highest level only allow pets that have already won championships in other shows. It is only natural that the puppies of the champion dog breed fetch a high price because the shows help to boost the reputation of the dog, kennel and breeder. This is because other people want to buy a pet, which resembles the champion so the popularity of the breed increases rapidly. There are two such prestigious shows, Crufts in the United Kingdom and the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in the United States.
